How the DXB layover planner works

Checking your visa

Layover looks up your passport nationality against three eligibility tiers: free visa on arrival, a paid transit visa on arrival (currently AED 50, valid 96 hours), or advance visa required — in which case exiting the airport isn't an option. UAE nationals get a straightforward "you have unrestricted access" message instead.

A handful of nationalities carry a "check manually" flag with a specific reason shown on screen, because their rules have changed recently or are genuinely ambiguous. The tool tells you when to double-check with GDRFA rather than guessing.

The time math

Your real usable time outside the airport is your layover length, minus exit processing, minus a fixed 90-minute return buffer for getting back through security in time. If that leaves nothing meaningful, Layover tells you to stay airside instead of pushing you out the door.

Exit processing time depends on your terminal and whether you're collecting checked bags — and it drops noticeably if you can use DXB Smart Gates (the biometric e-gates that skip the immigration counter). Checking that box is often the single biggest lever on how much time you actually get.

Layovers under 4 hours don't get an exit suggestion at all — there usually isn't enough margin to make it safe. Departures more than 48 hours out are rejected as a different kind of trip, not a layover.

Travel modes & offline plans

Every recommendation comes with a comfort badge — comfortable, tight, or risky — based on live traffic-aware travel time, not a flat estimate. A Fastest / Taxi / Metro toggle lets you see the plan under whichever mode you'll actually use.

Once you've built a plan, you can save a link or QR code that reopens the whole itinerary — including cached weather and route data — with zero signal needed. Useful for the exact moment you're about to lose wifi at the gate.

Who this is for

• Dubai International (DXB) only — not Al Maktoum (DWC), which isn't modeled here.
• Standard biometric citizen passports — other passport types are routed to a generic "advance visa required" message rather than a real answer.
• International transit passengers — UAE nationals and residents have a different, simpler situation this tool doesn't need to solve.
• 4-to-48-hour layovers — outside that window, Layover either won't suggest exiting or won't accept the date.
